How to Find the Right Therapist
Taking this step is
already the hardest part.
Congratulations — you're taking a big step forward for your mental health by looking for a therapist that's right for you. When you think of the heart of the issues you'd like to address, what comes to mind? Anxiety? Depression? Traumatic flashbacks? By honing in on your most urgent issues, you can narrow down what you're looking for.
If you've never been to a therapist, you'll want to look for one that has good reviews on Google or on Psychology Today. We also suggest doing a little bit of homework into what makes a good therapist. What works for you might not work for someone else — so make sure you look for reviews that connect closely with the issues you want to address.
Tip: You can also look for a therapist through your insurance company's website — even if you don't have insurance, many therapists will work with you on a sliding scale fee. We encourage you to check with your insurer first to understand what mental health coverage you have.
Along with therapy, engaging suicide cleaning professionals ensures the physical environment supports your emotional healing. A restored, safe home is an important foundation for the grieving process.

What to Look For
Common specializations after
traumatic loss.
Grief Counseling
Specifically trained to help individuals and families process loss — including traumatic or sudden death. Look for therapists who list bereavement or complicated grief as a specialty.
Trauma & PTSD
Trauma-focused therapists use evidence-based approaches like EMDR and CPT to help process traumatic experiences. Essential if you witnessed the scene or have recurring intrusive thoughts.
Anxiety & OCD
Many people experience heightened anxiety, obsessive thoughts, or compulsive behaviors following traumatic loss. Therapists specializing in anxiety disorders and OCD can provide targeted relief.
Depression
Profound sadness and depression are natural responses to traumatic loss. A therapist specializing in depression can help distinguish normal grief from clinical depression and provide appropriate treatment.
Family Therapy
When a traumatic loss affects an entire family, family therapy can help family members support each other and navigate grief collectively, reducing isolation and conflict during an already difficult time.
Child & Adolescent
Children and teenagers grieve differently than adults. A therapist specializing in child and adolescent mental health can help younger family members process the loss in age-appropriate ways.
Suicide Bereavement
Losing someone to suicide carries unique complexities including guilt, shame, and unanswered questions. Therapists who specialize in suicide loss can address these specific challenges.
Substance Use
Grief and trauma can trigger or worsen substance use. If you are concerned about coping through alcohol or drugs, seek a therapist with dual specialization in trauma and substance use disorders.
